For our first Episode, we talk about Lilian Jackson Braun and what we know about when she wrote these books. There's a 20 year gap between book three and book four (Turned on and Off, and Saw Red) and there's no official reason as to why she stopped, although she always gave full credit to her second husband Earl Bettinger (the husband who...) for getting her to start writing again.
Despite being incredibly prolific, publishing at least one book a year betweek 1987 and 2007, Braun was also incredibly private. She even let publishers incorrectly state her date of birth until she corrected an interviewer in 2005. She did however, always have cats - and there were always a Koko and a Yum Yum among them.
So why am I doing this epic read? And how did I manage to rope my husband into this? Well, I fell in love with the books early on and I've re-read favorites for years, but I've never read the whole series from start to finish and while we're still in this pseudo-quarrantine state, it seemed like a thing to do that we could do together. I do the actual reading (although Luke loves audio versions and it'll be fun to talk about how parts of the book come across in audio vs. print format later!) and write up the summaries with my commentary. Luke does the recording, editing and publishing of the acutal podcast and chimes in with great amusement while we record. And we do this all after we put our 7month old daughter to bed at night!
So here goes nothing - Happy Sleuthing!
